Tuesday has arrived…and almost gone as I write this post. I thought about what I was going to write about this Tuesday. As I continue to participate in my pity party, I figured I would write about what I love….Running.

I’ve been lucky enough to be a participant in his sport for about 10 years. It was a sport that I never imagined I would like, let alone love. In 2000, I decided I wanted to do a triathlon. Being a former competitive swimmer, I had the swim leg on lock! I didn’t really think much of the bike (yes…I know I can ride a bike…I should be FINE!!), so that only left the run. And let me say a big UGH!!!

I don’t like to do anything half ass, so I knew of I was going to this, I needed to face my “fear” of running. So…off I went. I started slowly, hated every step I took. But I wasn’t going to give up….

I did my first 5k about 3 years after I started running. The delay was because I was graduating from PA school, had a baby, and, oh….finding a job. It all fell into place, as it was supposed to. I kept running as a stress reliever. Working full time, having a baby, and a husband that worked out of town = one stressed out Angie. Running got me through some very dark, sad, and stressful times.

Outside of the physical benefits, I liked how running made me feel on the inside. It was by “happy place. It was the only thing, and still is, that I have during my day that doesn’t involve anyone or anything else. It’s just me, my music (sometimes) and the road.

And the more I ran, the more I LOVED it. And suffice to say, the triathlon went to the back burner and running became my passion. I wanted to do well, I wanted to get better, I wanted to be a runner.

Now as I am looking at another hiatus from running because of injury, I’m scared I won’t be able to do what I love. This is my second bout of shin splints in a few months. I am disappointed at myself because I’m in some pain while running. I’m mad at my body for “betraying” me, and I have been so good to it. Why me? Why again? Why now?

Here’s where I put myself in check…
I am here! I am here every day…breathing good air and being thankful for another day. I can still move when I want, when others can’t. I can still walk, and eventually run, when others can’t. I figured instead of focusing on what I don’t have right now is just wasted energy and time. It also builds up a bunch of negativity, and I don’t have any room for that now!

So what do I LOVE on Tuesday and all other days? RUNNING
I miss it now like I’d miss a loved one. But we will
Be reunited again, my friend! ๐ŸŽถReunited….and it feels so goooood

It was my (pity) party, and I can cry if I want to….

Again with the old adage “Be careful what you wish for…“. I asked for legs…BABY, I got it!!

20140428-223842.jpgDid I mention it was 4 ROUNDS!!! Holy legs, Batman!! As you probably know, I won’t feel it in the morning, but as the day progresses…I’m gonna PAY for it. That’s whatcha call “DOMS” or Delated Onset Muscle Soreness. Usually doesn’t hit until anywhere between 2 -3 days after the exercise. So…no later than Wednesday…I will be in a wheelchair!

My shins held out on the box step ups. I lowered the height of the box from my norm. I usually use a 20″ and I downgraded to a 16″ for today, and maybe for a bit,while I heal. Ugh……

Since “Shin-gate”, I am strongly fighting the urge to feel (and to verbalize) like such a wimp! But quickly, I put myself in check because they’re many people would might love “just” using a 16″ box! I need to learn that my pity party has to stay inside of me (and/or on my blog ๐Ÿ˜‰). That’s another self defeating attitude that I am working on! One of the MANY things that has to change, as all that negativity, just beings me down. br />

Blueberries….I got your BLUEBERRIES…!

Today, the family and I went to the Tampa Bay Blueberry Festival. I found a Living Social deal – admission for 2, free parking (normally $5), and 4lbs of U-pick blueberries. ABSOLUTELY jumped on this deal!!

20140427-200252.jpgIt is located at Keel and Curley Winery in Plant City, FL (about 30-ish minutes outside of Tampa and less than 15 minutes from me in Valrico).

20140427-200810.jpg I’ve been DYING to pick blueberries because I thought it would be a good experience for the boys. I’m the only one in my house that loves blueberries, so I’m IN!!

The festival was cute…it had plenty of vendors of all types, both independent and franchises – food,crafts, and jewelry….and DESSERTS.


Lots of booths with homemade foods like salsas, jams/preserves, spices, and olive oils. NICE!!

Wine tasting from the winery (grapes and blueberries) and craft beers were readily available for your tasting pleasure!

20140427-201110.jpgWe had the boys with us, so we didn’t get to partake in the tastings. Don’t get me wrong, we had a few beers, but not too many! By the way, you couldn’t have any of the nectar of the GODS until you had one of these…

Part of our Living Social deal was a free bottle of wine from the winery. We could select from 10-12 types of wine. After much thought (like 3 seconds), we selected a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The boys had a good time, despite the fact that it felt like 1000 degrees and a gazillion people were there.


It was time for the other meaning of the day…U-pick blueberries!!! I was able to see for the first time where those lovely blueberries came from…

20140427-205606.jpgUmmmm…WHAT?!?!?! What do you mean “No U-pick” today?? This is why I’m here, to pick some DERN (that’s right…DERN) blueberries!! Apparently that had a record number of 8000 people on Saturday, so it was closed for picking until next Saturday! BOO!! They all took my blueberries!!! #greedy

But wait….in my quest to teach my kids something other than an iPod/iPad, Kindle or anything electronic, we saw a blue sight amongst the unriped berries.

Oh yeah….and I ATE that A-pick berry, too! I sure did!!!

All in all, the weekend was good because I was able to spend it with my family. We are all so busy during the week, it sure is nice to have a day just for us…with or without blueberries!

Oh how I HATE thee….

….let me count the ways!
I want to take a saw and cut my shins off!! Can you believe this nonsense!! Let’s run through it…

1. I have new shoes
2. I have new inserts
3. I have KT Tape
4. I have calf sleeves (highly recommended at my local running store)
I still couldn’t get through my run today! I got through 1 mile and had to stop because of pain. I never knew how deeply I could be pissed until today! I rested a whole month….a MONTH! This is what I get???

All I did was some box jumps at CrossFit some time in the last two weeks….and they have come back! I said before no explosive moves fore, but it’s official…I’m done! I’m not willing to risk other goals of mine for box jumps or DUs.

So…of I go back to the bench and rest until otherwise advised. (The great thing about being a PA…I can make my own decisions regarding my rest time and when I can go back.๐Ÿ˜‰)

This is what I’ll be staring at for a while, but I don’t plan on being here forever….

Yesterday was a good workout but I felt kind of wimpy because I didn’t do DUs. Stinking shins…..

I used the KT Tape but remember it started coming off when I started sweating. SN: folks….it doesn’t take that long for THAT to happen!!!!.

Shins felt so-so….

I came home pissed off at the idea of not being able to run for awhile…AGAIN!!!!

But you know what got my mind off of it??? HUBBY!! No…not THAT way…..! THIS way…

20140425-193228.jpgMy hubby is the BEST chef I know! (No…seriously..he used to be a chef!) He can whip up anything I want, ANYTIME! This Cubanese* dish consisted of stir fried filet mignon with fresh English peas, onions, and snow peas, over a (small) bed of rice. Oh…and some of those Chinese crispy rice noodles to add a little crunch! Don’t forget a (small) glass of Cabernet Sauvignon to finish the dish. ๐Ÿท

TRIPLE OMG in my book!!!

SN: This is what we call “CUBANese, instead of JAPANese, because Miguel is Cuban- American and this is a Japanese inspired meal.
You like that??? That’s a Miguel ORIGINAL! He’s that guy…making up words that CRACK me up!! Another smart a** in the HOUSE!!

I’m INCREDIBLY lucky and BLESSED to have a hubby that cooks for me…ALL the time! (No…seriously….I don’t cook. Not unless you consider microwaving cooking!). I felt better after this meal. It was comfort food that comforted my achy shins. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
I will blog more on “Mig’s Meals” as they come. It will be great and you’re going to want to come over!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I sit here mentally preparing for the 5k tomorrow with Julian. Keep you posted on how “they” held up!

….it’s official! THEY.are.BACK! Yep…you guessed it…SHIN SPLINTS! I didn’t think it was possible. I felt it was coming back, but I was hoping that I was wrong. I ran the other day and it that old feeling was there. All I could think of was “DAMN!!!”.

I decided to try a new (to me) tape. I normally use Rock Tape

These opinions are mine from my experience with both products:
I liked the KT Tape technique for taping posterior shin splints, but I didn’t like the tape as much as Rock Tape. KT Tape didn’t seem to have time same endurance as Rock Tape. Meaning…it started falling off the MINUTE I started sweating. KT Tape provided great compression and it felt good while running. So, I’m thinking I could use Rock tape WITH KT Tape technique. What do you think?? Can’t hurt, I guess….

I’ve also heard that my local running store has shin splint sleeves, maybe for those that have chronic issues (ie ME)…so I might have to go get those and try them out. I’ll keep you posted…..

I’d do anything to make sure I didn’t have to rest for another month! At least with my 8 week shoulder rest from injury, I could still do other things. Kinda need your lower legs for many things!

Strength, I tell ya…..

Yesterday was a relatively “easy” day at the gym. Since I’ve asked to help with building more strength, some the traditional WODs aren’t on my list of “To Do”….

I’ve decided to keep AWAY from explosive movements like box jumps and DUs. Those movements are killing that spot on my shins! So, I felt like I was in an old school Step aerobics class with my “box jumps” in this WOD.

I secretly wish I was a real Southern gal. I mean I live in the the south (Florida to be exact) but I don’t LIVE in the south! Trust me when I say…it ain’t the same!

You betta WORK!!!

In my BEST RuPaul voice…YOU BETTA WORK!!!. I figured it is time for me to start balancing my CrossFit with other exercises. I had a nice conversation with myself. I said “self…..where do you want to go from here??” I have many goals in regards to my fitness…maybe some realistic and maybe some unrealistic. I’m still trying to figure it all out. I am already back to running (Thank GOD) and I’m eyeing a sprint triathlon in June.
Trying to balance it all…work, parenting, being a decent spouse, is very challenging. But “Put me in Coach!!”…I up for the challenge!!

I asked one of our lovely trainers about incorporating some more strength training, maybe alternating some WODs with some traditional strength training. I need to continue to work on my cardio for endurance- for running, for CrossFit and for triathlons. This is what she came up with…

Easter 2014

This post will seem VERY odd after my vodka tasting post yesterday! I wrote this post BEFORE the vodka, but some how it was lost in cyberspace! So, I will rewrite it for you. I know….I KNOW! You’re super excited, huh??

We, in the Leyva house, enjoyed Easter with church, family, and……CANDY!!!! The “candy mongers”, aka Julian and Aidan, got to their baskets FAST!! It felt like Christmas morning because they were up early before I could get to them!!!

Church was packed, as to be expected, but it was nice to celebrate this joyous day! My Easter Lily opened up beautifully….which is surprising considering I’m BLACK DEATH in regards to plants! They NEVER survive me!!! My house smells so good!!!
