#12

It’s SUMMER TIME, folks! You know what that means??? Yeah…work! Work…that’s what it means for me! 😂. But….it also means the yearly Summer Sunrise Watermelon 5k Series around beautiful Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, FL.  I’ve been doing this series for about 5 or 6 years now.  I LOVE this series because it keeps me motivated to run despite the hot and humid Florida weather.  I’m a FLORIDIAN, people and I can’t STAND the summer heat! But if I don’t sign up for a race, I’ll look for every excuse not to run, only because of the heat!! On the other hand…I HATE wasting money!! So..if I sign up…I’m DOING IT!!!

I always managed to rustle up my friends to run with me!

They are STILL my friends….I think!

I love when my “I hate running because it sucks” do so well!!! We had a PR in the group and no stopping too! I celebrated with them and for them because I know how hard they worked!

I on the other hand, didn’t have a good race.  I had to stop about 2 miles and change because it was hot and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. And I am always disappointed in myself when I do stop….

I felt defeated because I didn’t do well.  But I didn’t let that rain on the parade of my friend’s victories!  I didn’t do well because I really didn’t run in May.  My last race was the 2017 Star Wars Marathon Weekend – The Dark Side.  I ran the 5k

…and the 10k

All of my runs,up to that point, had already been on the calendar.  For some reason, May was missed and therefore nothing was scheduled! I have no one to blame but myself. Now let me be clear, I don’t pity myself because I am able to run.  I’m just disappointed that I didn’t do well. If you’ve been reading for a while you know I need that kick in the ass moment to shock me right back to reality with my running. Watermelon Series, race #1 = my kick in the ASS! 😉

It’s Monday and it’s a new beginning.  I’m ready….I’m recharged…I’m ready to GO!!!

How was your most recent run??

When did I……?

…..become a parent of a high schooler?

J’s first day at Santa Fe Catholic High School. This is a new school for him, so first day in another way as well. I am beyond nervous for him but he seems confident and ready for the new experience. Prayers, people….PRAYERS!!

….become a parent of a 4th grader?

Aidan’s first day of school at St.Joseph Catholic School.  This is the first time Aidan has not gone to school with his brother.  He had mixed emotions…happy that he’s the only brother left at the school but sad that he’s the only brother at the school!!!

….become a football parent AS WELL as a basketball parent?

J decided he wanted to try football this year.  I figure it can’t hurt…well…it CAN hurt really bad!!!  (He’s nursing a muscular injury now because of learning to tackle!  No practice today but back tomorrow…). But it can’t hurt because he is getting great conditioning for basketball and if he doesn’t like it, he gained some experience about another sport! Win WIN in my book!

….have a child that wants to be a swimmer too??
Aidan spent a month with my sister in VA.  His cousins swim and he desperately wants to swim now! With a month there and swim camp for 6 weeks, we are in swim mode to try and get on a team (or so HE says!). He swims every Saturday at the Y and he loves it! We shall see….

….forget how to use a lock for a locker in school?

I’m totally aging myself here but I remember going “3 turns to the right, 2 turns to the left, 1 turn to the final number”. Over 20 minutes trying to open this damn thing….only to find out you don’t do this ANYMORE!!! Wha?????

…..become the person that signs up for TWO races in one weekend!!

Yep…while J was figuring out his lock I was registering for the Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend run.  I did the 10k last year and was all too excited when I received the email that sign up was August 9th at noon. You know what I did??? I signed up for the 5k AND 10k!!! It’s costly but I am going to run with some girlfriends from HS and plan on making it a girls weekend! All too excited!!  I need the motivation to get back and what a perfect way!

I am sure this school year will many more firsts, so maybe there will be more “When did I…..?“posts in the future!😉

How was your day??? Did anyone have some first day of school stories???

May the COURSE be with you, 31782!

YES!!! I was finally here!!!! The Inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend.  This race weekend, I opted for the 10k.  This is a distance that I really enjoy and haven’t had the opportunity to run in about a year (insert and see #onearmbandit posts from December!!).  I was nervous and excited and being at the Health and Fitness Expo just made it all too real!!

IMG_8969

The 3 day Health and Fitness Expo was located at ESPN Wide World of Sports IMG_8974
..and you could FEEL the force the minute you entered the property!!! The 5k was earlier on Friday morning, so you could already see some of the cool bling and tech shirts walking around.  Kind of made me wish I did the 5k too!

We made our way on in to pick up my swag bag…IMG_8970

You see how BUSY it is!!! There are SO many people!!!

IMG_9054

Who the HECK is Angela?? Am I in trouble or something???

There were so many people, but everything flowed well because of all the volunteers and Disney cast members. I got my race number and off we went to walk around the Expo.

I am thinking some one else was just as excited as I was to be there!!!

IMG_8977

It sure IS!!!!

IMG_8963

Kylo Ren is his MAN!!!

IMG_8964

Wise words, Master Yoda!!!

I had to resist the Dark FORCE to NOT buy anything at any of the vendors! And let me tell you…that was HARD!!! I don’t do that…that’s just not normal!! I did manage to convince Hubs to stay around a little and get some photos. He’s NOT the biggest Star Wars fan; he doesn’t hate it, but doesn’t really understand the FANdemonium, either! But that’s ok, because Aidan was with me, and he got it…

IMG_8976

See what I mean???? #Vader77 #OGVillan

After hanging out at the Expo, we went to check in at our hotel. There were MANY people signed up for the all of the races this weekend and therefore many road closures. For transportation to the race, it was suggested to stay on a Disney property. Hubs surprised me by making reservation at the ONE Disney hotel that I have always wanted to stay…..

Grand Floridian

This place is BEYOND magical!!!

We stayed in Building 8….BOCA CHICA

YAY!!!

The hotel is reminiscent of Old Florida, like the times of Henry Flagler, John Rockefeller, and the like (see St.Augustine,FL ).  It was like stepping into a time warp, in a good way!!  All of the buildings are named after some of the  barrier islands in Florida.  The kids had a great time at the pool and we had a wonderful dinner at one of the restaurants on property.   We had an early evening because I had to get up early to catch the bus to the start.

How early did you ask???

DAMN!! That's early.....

DAMN!! That’s early…..

Yep…you read it right…3:10 AM to catch the bus at 3:30 AM.  All race participants needed to board the buses no later than 4 AM in order to get to the corral for the race start at 5:30 AM.  I was at Epcot by 4:15 AM, cleared the security, and hung around a little.  I managed to meet up with a high school friend, Kim, that I hadn’t seen in 20 years.  She was there with some friends to celebrate a 40th birthday.  It was so good to see her and catch up as we walked to our race corral.  (See you Kim for our NEXT 10k…but a lot sooner, please!!).  I was in corral C and trust me when I say, the ‘corral police‘ made sure you were where you were supposed to be!!  You can move back a corral (or two) but you can’t move up!  There were a total of 6 corrals (A-F) and we all started in waves.  The first wave was the Wheelchair racers at 5:29 AM and Corral A starting at 5:30 AM; each corral after that was at 3 minutes intervals. My corral came up…the countdown began…

....and GO!!!!

….and GO!!!!

The course took to the back part of Epcot and eventually through the park itself, by the World Showcase.  Hi Canada, Hi United Kingdom!!!     Down the Boardwalk and then we got to Hollywood Studios.  I paid close attention because I’ve never been there before!  I must come back and see it…in the LIGHT OF DAY!!  3 miles in…I’m feeling pretty good!

Between miles 3 and 4 brought some unexpected hills, which we all know I LOATHE!  You know when you are at a park, and you have that slight up hill walk to get to the next attraction? Yeah, well try and RUN that a few times!  #notFUN .  Some where along the way, we made it out onto the street (more like the highway) and we had to run up an on ramp (or down ramp, I can’t remember).  I was NOT prepared for this uphill battle and the force (ie my big behind) forced me into surrendering….to walk!  This slowed me down some, but I wasn’t the only one.

Mile 5 was approaching and I think I kinda felt like him….

Angry Darth Maul!

Angry Darth Maul!

I felt like I was further than this…but I wasn’t!  1.2 mile left!  A huge movie screen greeted us with scenes from The Return of the Jedi, when Princess Leia is riding through the forest, racing and battling the Stormtroopers.  That scene led us to the rocky, cross country like path that began the ending of the race (wasn’t prepared for THAT either!).  There were props from the movie to pose with, but I…..kept going!  As we entered towards the finish at ESPN Wide World of Sports, it started to sprinkle a little and that made me go faster! (I really don’t like running in the rain!!).

Official Time : 1:15.26

1353 out of 6919 Women

3533 out of 12169 finishers

My new BLING!!

A close up of the bling….

IMG_9040

I wasn’t in love with my time, but considering the course that I was completely unprepared for, I was ok.  Additionally, I hadn’t done the 10k distance in over a year, so considering this, I was ok.  I just have to do the distance again AND get some speed/hill work going!!!  As much as I hate hills, I know my time would be a little better had I been prepared.

NIce tech shirt, huh??

Nice tech shirt, huh??

Opinions on the race, as a whole?

My likes:

  • I thought the race was very well organized.  I had heard many “minuses” but I found it to be the opposite.  From the transportation to the start and finish, to the line up in the corrals, and to the ON TIME start….it all went so well!!
  • Fun with LOTS of costumes and people watching GALORE!!
  • You get to see the “behind the scenes” of the parks when all is shut down.  It was kind of neat being in the park when the “MAGIC” was off!
  • The after race photos with your medal(s).
  • The post race snacks were yummy!!
  • ...and I was HUNGRY!!!

    …and I was HUNGRY!!!

My dislikes:

  • I’m not really sure WHY this race was $110. I mean, this shirt and the medal were awesome. It was cool to have my name on my bib, but was ALL of this worth that price tag? #welcometoDISNEY
  • It’s not really a race that you can PR.  Many people stop to take pictures with the characters, mile markers(see above), and Star Wars props/memorabilia.  It was a little distracting, but I kept on running. You can do all this IF you keep up your pace (16 min/mile maximum).
  • The course was a little off for me…the hills and the rugged terrain.  I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either (but I would race it again!!)

Oh…I forgot!  My outfit!!  I went with my favorite droid, R2D2

IMG_9042

IMG_9035

…and it has a HOOD, too!!!

I told you it would be anticlimactic and it paled in comparison to some of the costumes and original outfits, but I was happy with it!

I had such a great weekend, and now I can see why everyone loves to runDisney.

IMG_8973

Well, Mickey…add me to the list, because next year 10k…you WILL be mine!!! #maytheCOURSEbewithyou

IMG_8968

Congrats to all of you who participated in any and ALL of the races this weekend!!!

Thanks for reading! ❤

What events did YOU do this weekend??

T-minus…

…2 days and counting!  To what, you ask??

Yes,folks…it is almost here!  No…not the movie (which I DID buy the DVD last week)…the Star Wars Race Weekend at Disney.

I’m going to run the 10k on Saturday.  This is my first Disney race, so I’m excited and nervous all wrapped together.    Like most of the themed races, costumes are encouraged (with rules of course!). I’ll  give you a hint of who I’m leaning towards…

Cute, ain’t he?? Wonder how many R2D2s there will be?? Can’t wait to show you what I have to wear. Warning: it may be some what anticlimactic for you as a reader considering what some may wear. But I’m still excited!

The expo started today, which I won’t be able to get to until tomorrow.  This is when I pick up my race packet and see all the stuff I want to buy and take home! 😂 I’ll be able to bring you some info on the expo tomorrow. #excited

The race weekend includes:

  • 5k on Friday
  • 10k on Saturday
  • Half marathon on Sunday

Whew!!!!

I’m staying on Disney property this weekend with the fam, so getting to the race will not be challenging.    They have free bus transportation to and from the race because I hear that parking is no bueno and there are several road closures, as well. #ainthavingTHAT

Can’t wait to bring you all that is Disney racing from this weekend.  May the Force be with You!

Anybody else Disney racing this weekend??

RunGAB #4

Here it is….WEDNESDAY! And the end of the month! September?? Where did you go??  Off running…that’s where! So, as we ran the month away, we would talk about…

….that I found some new snacks! The QUEEN of snacks strikes again.😉.   I’ve known about Kind bars for a while but never had one.  Man….I missed that cue!  I’m glad I tried them because they are my new favorite!    This one is made with…wait for it…..COFFEE! #yes

…that I signed up for a 5k this weekend.

I got off my ASS and decided I didn’t need to wait for anyone to participate.  I’m becoming more and more comfortable with going by myself.  I’m loving it…

…I need to submit a time for a race BEFORE the Disney race.  The fine print on the registration states that a 10k time needs to be submitted by January 2016.  Guess I’m gonna have to do one!😉. I’ve have one on my radar for October and the one I did last year in December.  We shall see…

…I’m going CRAZY at work!! Our office is transferring to electronic medical record (EMR) and it is driving me nuts!!  Today’s run (our gab and the DREADmill) was all thanks to “EMR Frustration“.

I turned the negative into a positive! #runLAFITNESS

Thanks for listening and for the chat!

How was your Wednesday?

You WILL choose the Dark Side

…(in my best Darth Vader) yep, that’s right….

I got in to the 10k at Disney in April 2016!!

If it sounds like I’m excited….I am!!!  This literally was the bright spot in my day.  Today, I was in EMR (electronic medical records) training ALL day at the hospital.  I set my alarm for the reminder because I’ve heard it’s crazy registration day.  I knew regardless if I was given a break during my session…I was registering at 12 noon SHARP!  I had the website open, my Active account open and already sign in, and I was waiting for 12.  Someone gave me a heads up to be READY to register and I listened! By 12:04….I was done!!!

I’ll spare you the cost but I’m sure those of you that have participated in a Disney run know they are costly. But I understand it is WELL worth it!

Let me know if any of you are participating! Would love to meet you!!!  Now…..what to wear????  I’m kinda partial to my guy, R2D2…

Any suggestions???😉

RunCHAT

If we were running together now, I’d let you know…

…..I am doing better this week with my food intake.  It’s a DAILY struggle, but it’s worth it!

I am still trying to figure out HOW to fit in a triathlon this season.  My first was cancelled and I feel like I’ve lost my mojo! I’m thinking about doing one in 3 weeks…

I did this series last year in Clermont (FL).  This race is the last in the series, so why not!?!?  I need the boost.

I am considering doing a Disney race! But not until next year.  Registration for the Star Wars Half Marathon-The Dark Side opens September 22.  I have always heard these races are FUN and who doesn’t love SW???  I tried to sign up one time, but my waffling decision making skills caused the delay in registering and therefore MISSING a slot because is SOLD OUT!  I would like to do the 10k because a half just doesn’t seem possible to do…for me!

I am planning a 5k race for my kids school for next year. 😁. I’ve run MANY but have never been on the operations side of the business. Any advice?

….I have survived the first 2 weeks of my kids being back at school! I crave the routine but NOT the homework routine! Ugh…..

That’s it for today’s RunChat!  I’ll see you for our next run to chat some more. Next Wednesday??

Recharge and Re-evaluate for 2015

Seriously….I have been on a 2 week workout hiatus since the beginning of the holidays. I did manage to get a Christmas Eve morning run in, but haven’t again since then. No excuses (because I run when I’m on vacation) but I DID have my beloved family in from Virginia…my sister, BIL, and their “Army” (THEIR words, not MINE 😉): Ray, Jolie, Marc and Baby Gavin.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/383/62083904/files/2014/12/img_5099.jpgAren’t they all so CUTE??❤️
(Source: Monica A. Vignier…aka my sister)

I’ve promised myself that I am back on track after the new year. I honestly didn’t feel bad about the break. I’ve been off from work, got to sleep in, spend time with family and that’s something I don’t get to do very often. Then, that “thing” that happens…you know that self hating voice that tells you what that you suck and you should get your ASS moving….yeah that STILL happens! Time to sit down and recharge and re-evaluate my new goals for 2015. Before I can look forward, I need to look backwards at my previous goals. I set some goals last year on my first blog post. I thought it would be neat to see what my goals were for 2014 and IF I met them (or not)….

1. 10k ✔️
Yep…I did it! By the skin of my teeth..but I did it! Not like I died, but I just barely made the goal of completing one by 2 weeks. I loved it!! If you don’t recall my love for the 10k, check it out.

2. CrossFit Level I Certification 👎
That didn’t happen, but I’m ok with that. I honestly scaled back on my “intensity” after my last competition. I thought that I can always get the certification later (if I still wanted to) and that I didn’t have to do it by said deadline. Long story short…I’m good with failing at this goal.

3. TriahlonS✔️
I’m going to give myself a check because I DID do more than ONE triathlon in the year 2014. I wanted to do three but could only make 2 this season. I’ll take that….

Tomorrow, I am going to sit down and figure out my goals for 2015.

Happy New Year to you!!! I hope that you have a prosperous and FIT 2015!!!!

It’s all about them PANTS….

Last weekend, I did my first 10k. I think I’m still riding on that high! I haven’t done ANYTHING this week because of kiddo activities, but then that’s nothing new either! 😉

Since it was so cold last week AND still cold, I wanted to invest in some running pants. True to form, I waited until the very LAST minute to get them (ie the night before)!! I went to Hibbett Sports and found a few pairs. I am really funny about my body (BIG SURPRISE on that one, huh??) and I don’t like form fitting clothes. Well..that’s really all that’s available!! And if you try to size up with the hopes that it isn’t so form fitting, you look like you have some “issues” in an area where we females shouldn’t have “issues”…get me????

I found a pair that I LOVE….right fit, right color…right fairly decent price. SOLD!! Only problem…they were Men’s pants. And there went my theory on those “issues” I mentioned, but they were perfect!

IMG_4986.JPG(Source: Nike.com/running)

When I put them on, you couldn’t tell they were Men’s pants. I picked a Small size (….only time in my life THAT’LL happen!!)

IMG_4954-0.JPG

IMG_4953.JPGLOVE that little back pocket!

IMG_4955.JPGThe legs have a reflective strip which I imagine is good for night time running. I’m guessing…since I DON’T run at night! #skerred

IMG_4956.JPGZIPPERS! They get me just as excited as thumb holes on a jacket!! 😃

They were perfect..kept me warm and held up during the “sweat fest”‘of the run. That Dri-Fit is NO JOKE!! Check out Nike’s official website for more running gear! I’m already eyeballing another piece of clothing….. #helloSANTA?

Hope I have a chance to get my money’s worth and wear them again during our Florida “Winter” weather. I am looking forward to the Christmas break, as I can make up for lost workout time from this week.

Stay WARM my friends….

Yeah…that just happened!

This morning…this COLD Florida morning I did my first 10k. What do I mean by cold??

IMG_4950.PNGThis is the temperature right NOW but this morning, at race time…41 degrees!!. Nothing like the cold weather to get you moving! My friend, Sam (from our triathlon glory) ran with me. Yeah… I roped her in AGAIN she signed up with me again. 😉

I was EXTREMELY nervous this morning! I’ve never run this far IN.MY.LIFE! Five miles is the most I’ve ever run, so you can see WHY I thought I would die. Like meet my maker TODAY, die!😇 My stomach hurt…my heart was racing….I felt like POO!

The Jingle Bell race was for the Friends of The Winter Haven Library.

IMG_4958.JPG(Sorry for that shot….just as I was shooting the picture, the dude walked right in front of me! 😁).

The proceeds help the library with necessary upgrades, new books, etc. Race time was 7 am and by the time the buzzer buzzed…I was ready and over my “issues” prior to the race. I didn’t get many pictures during the race…well…because I was running. 😉 Seriously though….I haven’t figured out the balance of running and taking pictures to post. #rookie. I want to concentrate on the run because I’m just NOOOOOOOT that good enough yet to just run a race all “willy nilly” and not thinking about it. But I’m working on it…..

It was a great course to run…a bridge was involved (HATE those!) in the middle and of course on the way back. I didn’t psych myself out like I normally tend to do. It was a fun race because many were dressed in their BEST Christmas running gear, socks, hats, you name it!! (Didn’t get any pics of that before the race because it was too darn COLD!!). You know what wasn’t really fun?? The BELLS!! Well, you ask, what would a jingle bell race be without jingle BELLS???

IMG_4959.JPGThis thing was strapped on to every runners sneakers, hats, headbands…WHATEVER. 🎶Do you hear what I hear?? 🎶. Ugh….I really didn’t like the sound of the bells with each heel strike, each passing runner, or each huff and puff. That was my only complaint.

I felt so good, so EMPOWERED after the race. I felt it wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be. It wasn’t that I “killed” the race, but for the first time in a LONG time, I just ran. Just for the sheer enjoyment of the run! I am feeling like I have checked off another “Want” off of my list….

10k✔️✔️

I am going to be sore, but it’s a different sore…a sore that I welcome because of my accomplishment.
I going to be honest, I have a little crush on 10k now and I am thinking I might have to leave 5k. 10k really makes me HAPPY, so the break up might be inevitable. I’ll always love you 5k, because you were my first, but I feel something I haven’t felt in a long time with 10k….passion for running again.

IMG_4948.JPGSam and I with the “afterglow” of the race. (Do I get one of those “10k” magnets for my car now??)

Even Santa from Legoland (Winter Haven) came to spread his Christmas cheer and congratulate us….

IMG_4947.JPG

So, in my BEST Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca..”Louis (insert 10k), I think this the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” Cue music……

IMG_4961-0.JPGSource

What did you accomplish that you really wanted to today? Or ANY day?

IMG_4945-0.JPG….And some parting thoughts inspired by my GIRL, Wonder Woman!! It’s in us ALL!!
