Half #2….ugh!

“Oh….hey! Let’s do our next Half in Savannah!!!”, I say. And my girlfriends and I sign up with all intentions of running this race and having some fun times in The Peach State.

We signed up for Publix Women’s Half Marathon. For those that may not want to do the 13.1 miles, there was a 5k as well. This race took you through the beautiful parts of Savannah, starting and ending at Forsyth Park. (Remember Forrest Gump? Yeah…THAT park!)

The route….to my death! 😂

We were able to see parks and squares all throughout town. I saw parts of Savannah that I’d never seen or experienced before. I can not tell you how much I LOVE Savannah and the South! This was a treat!

Now…that I’ve given you the pretty, let’s get to the nitty gritty of it all. I began my training about 10ish (maybe a few more) weeks prior to this race. I have a running base, so I never questioned the amount of time for training. But then…life got in the way! I started off strong, keeping up with the training program from Nike Run Club. I always use their programs and can’t speak enough on how easy it is to follow and how much I enjoy using the program #notanAd . When life decided to creep in, ie BUSY KIDS…my training fell by the wayside off the map! 😂. I guess my body needed…or better yet CRAVED the rest because I didn’t run ONCE while on Spring Break with my family. I always…ALWAYS run on vacation! I had my clothes and shoes and yet didn’t go. I can’t explain why…but I just went with it, I guess.

In total, I exited the last 2 weeks of my plan. I should say 3 weeks because I only did ONE run in the 3 weeks prior to this race. My friend Terri and I had some #confessiontime, multiple times, prior to this race! Something like “I’m gonna die!” or “I’m not ready!“…or my favorite “I’m more excited about seeing you and eating at the restaurant than I am about this race!” You know…stuff like that! 😂. But we decided, we are going to do it, enjoy the race and place and more importantly enjoy being with each other! We agreed that this was not going to be a race that’d we would PR by any measure! We each ran our own race – *that’s race talk for “she’s faster than me and my slow behind was left behind“*

I didn’t mention that my IT Band started acting up again. I noticed it at my 10k in March, around mile 5. It’s not so bad to deal with because you only have 1 more mile to finish the race. However, this was something I did NOT want to revisit during my half. To me, this is just as bad as the ever present, pain in the butt shin splints (which I’ve had twice in my running life and NO thank you!). I started my ITB exercises again with the hopes I would be fine for race time….

7:30 am, race time!

Don’t worry, Apple Watch! ‘Bout to…

It always feels like a cattle call when there are so many people at the start. It takes a few minutes to get in your groove, find your place in the pack and get that pace going. I eventually passed the 2:45 pace group and kept steady. I was looking to be between 2:30 and 2:45 any way, so I was stoked. “Oh…you think you’re gonna do this???” 💥BOOM💥. Per my previous run, I felt the tightness in my hip, which for me, is the precursor to the discomfort that comes with IT Band Syndrome. I really didn’t feel it much until mile 7, so thought I was pretty good. I was able to slow my pace a little and continue to run. By mile 10, it was tight and I felt knee some knee pain and I had to start run-walk intervals. I had 2:45 pacer on my back, but eventually she passed me! She stayed in my site for another half of mile or so, but I never managed to catch up. #bummer I stayed with the intervals until about mile 11.5 -12. When I went to run again, it was like someone stabbed me in my knee!! “This is IT!! This is how I’m gonna die! Die by IT Band Syndrome! They are going to find me on the streets of this BEAUTIFUL city…dead because I can’t run!” #whyyousodramatic 😂

I made the decision to walk the remaining 1.1 miles. I was mortified! I was ashamed! But then I had to check myself because there were women out here just like me doing there thing- running, walking, intervals, whatever! They were doing it and it didn’t (and doesn’t) matter HOW you are doing it! I realized that my body needed to walk because it was protecting itself from ME, honestly. Had I been able to run, I would have, no lie! But what would the consequence be? Injury, which equals time off ! Once I realized this, I surrendered and checked my ego and walked at a brisk pace.

Coming into Forsyth Park at mile 13, I saw Terri and Jerry (her Hubs). And what do you do when you see your friends and you want to celebrate finishing a half marathon?

A Gator Chomp, duh!!!! We are all Alumni and I needed to show Georgia where the {insert bad word} WE are from! 😂 #GoGators

Ain’t she cute!!! My girl, Terri❤️

Chip time -3:00.25

I wasn’t surprised to be honest. This time makes me 25 minutes slower than last year’s half. I was sad but I didn’t put much on that time because I know what happened prior to the race. “Training is, as training does” right, Forrest?

I will be prepared better next…if there is a next time. Terri and I both agree that our next trip/race will not be a half. Probably just focus on the 10k because I really enjoy the distance. 5k will always have my heart too! Right now, and particularly since I am older, life is busy and I don’t know if I have the time, dedication or desire to train for the half distance again. Additionally, the possible injuries that may occur after the race. I don’t know if I’m willing to stop running or working out because I hurt myself.

We were able to celebrate our race with a fantastic dinner at Alligator Soul. Their take on classic Southern cuisine is exquisite! BONUS??? Since three quarters of the group are Gators, how can this restaurant NOT be loved by us??

I can tell you what I didn’t like!!! Walking down those stairs to get to the restaurant! My God….my legs! Remember, they always say “What goes up, must go down“, right??!! Well, reverse it because I had to go up the stairs after dinner! 😂

Gumbo’s Baby Back

Red Deer

Lamb Chops

Only thing not picture was The “Little Hilbo” named after the owner which is a 16oz bone in Ribeye that I tried to devour! Everything was DELICIOUS!

Back: Gator, Non Gator / Front: Gator, Gator

We had such a good time and promised to not make it a year to see each other again!!! Both Terri and I are looking for races to do for our next trip! We are looking at you, Magnolia (Waco,TX). I’m counting the days until we can do it again!!

Thanks for taking my tour of Savannah and thank you Publix for such a GREAT race!

What have you been up to???

PS– if you are looking for a great place to stay while in Savannah, look no further than Mansion on Forsyth Park .

Top Floor?? Where Hubs slept while I was DYING!😂

Hubs and I have had the opportunity to stay there 3 or 4 times and it’s our favorite spot in Savannah. Make it your business to get there, people! #notanAd

RunGAB

I changed the name because I think there is something I’ve read before that uses “RunCHAT”. I can’t remember if it’s a blog…or a special hashtag..but after I wrote the post, I felt like I’ve heard it before. So before someone shouts “Hey…that’s MINE!!!”, I changed it!! Since I gab all the time…about ANYTHING…why not RunGAB?? So, I’ll keep it…unless y’all tell me it sucks!! 😂
If we were running today, I’d tell you….

…I FINALLY signed up for the triathlon! I’d also tell you I’m scared that I’m going to fail!! But…hey…I’ll be there!

….I am struggling to find a regular schedule that works for me for ANY type of training. You working folks out there understand, right? Now sprinkle in two active boys and now you see how I struggle even more!! Julian’s training days are Tuesday and Thursday. Aidan MAY be going back to Scouts this year. So…how do fit ME in?? Right now…I schedule on Sundays(for the week) but sometimes even that has to change!! It’s very frustrating! Ugh. I managed to squeeze in a little (VERY LITTLE) run in today…

1.33 is better than NO or ZERO.33, right? I continually remind myself of that. I still need to figure out the strength training…but I’m working on it!
….college football season is HERE!!! If you have been reading for a while, you will know that I am an alumni of The University of Florida! This time of year is the best! I don’t get to go to many games, but the TV at home will do! The first few games are usually not challenging, but we are in a rebuilding year…new players and new coach. Nonetheless….GO GATORS!!!
  #iBLEEDorangeandblue

….my kids found my Junior High yearbook. Man…was that a blast from the past!! And in some ways…not so good!!

   It DOES say ’86 because THAT’S when I was in 8th grade!!!😂

What do you think about this?

 Swim team….😂
Or how ’bout THIS….

 Cheerleading…😂😂. Just to
show you a few,so you can get a good laugh too!!
Let’s RunGAB next week!

How was your Wednesday?

Rest day….Like it or Not

Oh Friday…how I LOVE thee!! I’ve been looking for you all week! Not like I have anything super exciting planned but it’s a LONG weekend….LABOR DAY WEEKEND, Baby!!!

IMG_4158.JPGHaving Monday off (actual Labor Day) means the WORLD to us working folks/parents! One more day to get stuff done and prepare for the week! The weekends go so fast, that by the time you look up…it’s Monday! #damn

I fully intended to meet my girlfriend, Leslie, for a run around the lake after work.

IMG_2399.JPGWe haven’t seen each other much since she doesn’t come to the gym anymore because of her work schedule AND since the kiddos started school!

I usually take Friday off, but I took full advantage of the idea of:
A. Catching up
B. Getting in an unplanned run
C. Doing something BEFORE I pick up the kids!!

But guess what??? Mother Nature had a different plan. NO, not THAT!!!😉. About an hour before it’s time to leave work….the sky started to become and black…and them it.was.ON!! Rain like NO business came falling out of the sky!! #typicalFLORIDA

It didn’t let up about 1 1/2 hours!! So….NO run!!! #weatherFAIL
I was pissed!!! But I got over it…picked up the kiddos….went home and relaxed!

My plan is to run in the morning, and get myself back on track for possible 10k before the end of the year. I am still in training for my triathlon in October, so this will help!!

So, I thank Mother Nature for the I unscheduled rest day today. I probably needed it more than I would like to admit…..

How was your Friday?
Any plans for Labor Day weekend?

PS….College Football is BACK!! And my Gators are playing tomorrow! Excited isn’t the word….

IMG_4156.JPGGot my NEW lawn flag!!
And we are getting ready to….

There you have it…my LOVES. I have a few more but I had to tailor the list! 😁
Hope you like it….

Easter 2014

This post will seem VERY odd after my vodka tasting post yesterday! I wrote this post BEFORE the vodka, but some how it was lost in cyberspace! So, I will rewrite it for you. I know….I KNOW! You’re super excited, huh??

We, in the Leyva house, enjoyed Easter with church, family, and……CANDY!!!! The “candy mongers”, aka Julian and Aidan, got to their baskets FAST!! It felt like Christmas morning because they were up early before I could get to them!!!

>

20140421-093001.jpg

20140421-093039.jpgShame on me for not getting a picture BEFORE they got to it!!! #epicMOMfail. They, like their mom, love the Gators too! I couldn’t resist getting these buckets for them. Brainwashing Educating those kids right!!😉

Church was packed, as to be expected, but it was nice to celebrate this joyous day! My Easter Lily opened up beautifully….which is surprising considering I’m BLACK DEATH in regards to plants! They NEVER survive me!!! My house smells so good!!!

20140421-134618.jpg BEAUTIFUL!!!!

The boys were ready for Mass in their new Easter shirts…….>

20140421-143038.jpg….which I’m PROUD to say I still hold to that tradition of buying something new for Easter? Thanks, Mom!😘❤️

And as a tradition in our house, Miguel (aka Hubby) is hooking up a lovely Easter Dinner for us…..as I sat writing this post originally! Damn cyberspace!!!!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful day with family and friends. I am still basking in the joy of our Risen Lord…..and also thankful that my kids weren’t bothering the HELL out of me in the car this morning! #catholicschoolproblems #poorme

20140421-143526.jpg AMEN Cute, huh? From “Catholic Church” Facebook page.>

Surprised Saturday

….and NOT in a good way!! I’m sad to report that my BELOVED Gators lost to UConn 63-53. #heartbroken💔

20140405-211416.jpg
And in ALL kinds of weather…we Gators stick TOGETHER!!
They had a great season and a great tournament run, but the outcome wasn’t what any of us expected. This truly was MARCH MADNESS!!
Still LOVE my Gators!!
#bleedOrangeandBlue

Today…I literally had NO time to squeeze in any type of workout for myself. My youngest, Aidan, went to a tennis clinic. I have secretly hoped one of my kids wanted to play tennis!

20140405-212048.jpg
He came home wanting tennis lessons! (Oh no….WHAT have I created??)
I’ll keep you posted!

T-minus 7 days until Julian and I do our 5k. His first and my first since I haven’t run in almost a month because of my WICKED shin splints! They are feeling great and I can’t WAIT!

Hope your weekend is going well!

This is Paleo, right….?

Let me first start by saying…. The Gators made it to the Elite 8 with their win against UCLA!

20140328-182957.jpg
And now we prepare to take on the “Cinderella” of the tournament University of Dayton Flyers. (Tonight as a matter of fact..because this post is LATE!). Back to our regular programming…..
Hubby and I are on a little get-a-away, sans kiddos, in Orlando. Our first night we ate at a wonderful restaurant, Texas de Brazil.

20140329-084524.jpg

20140329-084657.jpg
The place was GORGEOUS!!! If you haven’t been to a “churrascaria”, please put it on your list! It is an all you can eat experience like no other. They have 15-16 different types of meats prepared different and to your liking. The carvers called “gauchos” bring these large skewers to the table and carve the meat for you. Can you say “Paleo HEAVEN”!!!! You have them come as much as you like, all you have to do it use the little cards on your table

20140329-085315.jpg
Green for YES…keep it coming!!

20140329-085400.jpg
Red for NO..slow it down brother, I need a breather!

The food doesn’t just include meats. They is a WICKED salad bar with a variety of salad, antipasto, cold salads, sushi and more.

The side items with your dinner include garlic potatoes, Brazilian cheese bread, and sweet fried bananas! Yummmmm…
The vino selection was crazy, and hubby picked an excellent Malbec..

20140329-085851.jpg
It’s a grape from Argentina and this is my FAVORITE wine! Perfect with all this heavy meat!
(In my BAD infomercial voice)..but WAIT! There’s MORE!!!
Dessert!! We selected from like 8 different selections. Survey says…..

20140329-090238.jpg
CHOCOLATE MOUSSE CAKE
And all I’m gonna say is “Whoa…great selection”

Everything was perfect! Texas de Brazil has many locations, so if you have one in town, go check them out!!

CHEERS!

WILT #4

It’s Tuesday…it’s TUESDAY!!!
I almost forgot that it’s time for WILT!!! My how the week flies, so off we go……

1. NCAA Men’s Basketball

20140225-083232.jpg

I grew up in a household with a father that LOVED basketball, more specifically college basketball. Growing up, if a game was on, we got the “Not now…the game is on!” comment fairly frequently. You had two jobs….stay, BE QUIET,and watch the game OR leave. That was it…no questions asked. And this, my friends, is where I learned to love the sport of basketball. Mind you, never picked up a ball to play an actual game, but I love it. My sister and I are grateful to our father for MANY reasons and this time of year we appreciate him even more!

20140225-093820.jpg
Dad and his girls……

2. University of Florida Gators

Yep….that’s me!! I’m a Gator girl and I bleed Orange and Blue!

20140225-094323.jpg

Why else am I so happy being a Florida Gator, you ask?? (If you aren’t asking…I’m gonna tell you any way!! 😆)

20140225-094447.jpg
WE ARE NUMBER 1 in the AP Poll !!!!

We have 2 National Championships- 2006 and 2007. Maybe Billy and his Gators will go for #3!!!

It’s GREAT to be a Florida Gator!

3. Shoes
I’ve been really getting into different shoes lately. This is a love that I have picked up from my mother. I dub her “Junior Imelda Marcos” (remember her with the wall to wall closet of shoes???) because she literally has a shoe in every color and probably for every occasion. Before I became a PA, I was an Athletic Trainer (you know…they guy or gal that runs out on the field when the player gets hurt??? That was me!!) at a high school in Miami. My “uniform” was shirts and sneakers,,which I adored! I, like my mother, had a sneaker in every color!
It wasn’t until I changed my profession that I started thinking out of the traditional “black and brown” shoe box. I started to find spunky shoes that I could jazz up an outfit with for work. I mean I wear a white coat ALL day…how boring is that??? My mother would be so proud…..

20140225-102016.jpg
What do you think about THESE babies??? I found these at Payless for……$19.99!!!! Woo Hoooo!!!

4. Honey Crisp Apples
Have any of you TRIED these??? Wow!!! Perfect mixture of sweet and tart apple. I’m am usually a Granny Smith Apple kinda of girl, occasionally dallying in the world of Gala and Fuji’s too. But man, when I accidentally picked this apple up (I thought it was something else!)….I have NOT turned back! I’m not sure if they have a season, per se, but when I get them…I get ALOT of them! They can be rather costly…ie bought one at Wally World today and it was $1.67 for ONE!!!!

20140225-205019.jpg
(Used the BIG picture to,show you the size of my love!!!)

Another WILT has come to an end, sadly!!
See you next Tuesday!!!

Gators

If there is one thing that is constant about me (other than the fact that I am TOTALLY nuts..) is that I LOVE my Gators…. The University of Florida Gators!!! I mean, what alumni doesn’t, right?? I have the traditional Gator stuff…you know….
…the mug

20140113-140110.jpg

..the hat..

20140113-215621.jpg

…the iPhone cover, etc. But I thought it was interesting how many non traditional things I’ve seen, all in the name of Gators!

Here’s what I saw:

Gator shoes..because EVERYONE needs these for game day!

<img src="https://amal7072.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/20140113-215911.jpg" alt="20140113-215911.jpg"

Need a glass of wine? Why not try these Gator crystal glasses? Keep it classy, Gators…keep it CLASSY!

20140113-220110.jpg

How ’bout some snacks?? Chocolate covered pretzels with Orange and Blue sprinkles!!! Sign me up….

20140113-220452.jpg

Need some sauce for that tailgating BBQ….??

20140113-220821.jpg</a

Need the house to smell good after all the Rowdy Reptiles leave! Here's a candle…

20140113-222528.jpg
Which by the way actually smells like an actual gator in the swamp (NOT the football field, mind you!)

I’m going to keep an eye out for of all this Gator non traditional fare. Who knows what I might find and share with you next!

GO GATORS!!!
